About

Makena Coffee Estate is a family farm that belongs to Mr. Japheth, located in Gariama location, Rung’eto sub-location in Kirinyaga County. This estate is about 20 km from Embu town. It rests on the slopes of Mt. Kenya, nestled in Kenya's agriculturally rich Central Province.

 

Makena Coffee Factory is dressed with red-volcanic soil that infuses it with all the mineral and organic goodness necessary for optimum production. It experiences an annual rainfall of 1,500mm at 1,750m above sea level. In addition it enjoys cool temperatures of 13-26°C.

 

Timely and selective hand picking of red-ripe cherry is carried out in Makena estate. Cherry is delivered to wet mill the same day it is picked. Cherry sorting is carried out at the wet mill prior to the pulping. Red ripe cherries are separated from underripe, overripe and foreign matter. Processing utilizes clean river water (wet processing) that is recirculated before disposal into seepage pits. Sun drying is done before delivery of the coffee to the dry mill for secondary processing. The highest standards of hygiene are observed throughout this process. Then parchment is delivered at Central Kenya coffee Millers in Karatina Nyeri County.
