About
Chania and Oreti Estates are the last large-medium private coffee plantations in Kenya managed by descendants of pioneer farmers. The estates' history traces back to Allen Charles Harries, who arrived in Kenya in 1904 and established Karamaini Estate in Thika. His son, Ivan, expanded the family’s coffee farming efforts at Chania Estate in 1926, experimenting with various crops before focusing on coffee. Ivan's son, Peter, founded Oreti Estate in the 1950s, introducing macadamia nuts and pineapples alongside coffee.
The family business, A.I.R. Harries & Son Ltd, passed through generations, with Peter's grandson Boyce taking over in 2013. Chania Estate spans 180 acres and grows several Arabica coffee varieties, including the historic French Mission and newer disease-resistant strains. Oreti Estate, at 90 acres, primarily grows SL 34, valued for its superior roasting quality. Coffee blocks are named after local landmarks or stories, reflecting the estates' deep ties to the region’s history and culture.
