About
In the Dimtu district, Dikitu is the village's name and washing station that this coffee comes from. Owned and managed by husband and wife, Gizaw Alemayehu and Frehiwot Mekonnen. More than 350 smallholding farming families produce this coffee in Dikitu.
Gizaw and Frehiwot are close partners of Utopia Coffee, importers of Ethiopian specialty coffee to the Australian coffee market. Utopia Coffee bridges the gap between passionate, forward-thinking producing partners and coffee roasters.
The Dikitu village is a day and a half drive from Addis Ababa, Ethiopia's capital city. Although Dikitu is relatively new and upcoming as a specialty coffee producing area, before the early 2000s, most of the land was unfarmed. This means the soil is very fertile, and coffee crops can easily flourish. In addition, the coffee and the farming practices are organic by default, with the mountainous highland region offering the most gifted microclimate.
Since six decades ago, Alemayehu (Gizaw's father) used to own and produce coffee in the Yirgacheffe surrounding area until the new socialist government formed in 1974 and nationalized his farms. With coffee estates taken by the government, the young Gizaw realized growing coffee wasn't the right path for him. So instead, he focused on modern processing and supply to pursue his father's vision alongside his wife, Frehiwot.
This decision turned out crucial to the family's success. He can support the local farmers who can't export coffee directly by themselves or reach an international market. Gizaw and Frehiwot channel their earnings to improving processing facilities and coffee quality, thus increasing local farmer's income.
Gizaw and Frehiwot have strong ties and ethical relationships with local farmers and neighboring communities. In addition to community support, they have built a school, provided school supplies to over 700 students, and financially support the building and maintenance of local facilities.
